Dear Mindy,

Thank you for your interest in the American Social Health Association*s (ASHA) Support Services Program.  The Herpes Resource Center (HRC), a program of ASHA, currently provides technical support and information to approximately 100 affiliated HELP Groups worldwide.

ASHA not only offers technical a! dvice and accurate information concerning HSV, but also provides information about how to start and maintain a HELP group.  Starting and maintaining a HELP group can be a very rewarding experience for many reasons.  It provides an opportunity for community outreach and education, helping others in need, making new friends, and personal growth.

However, starting a HELP group can be a challenge.  There are several requirements that must be met in order to become an ASHA affiliated HELP group.  Among the requirements are finding a meeting room, locating a medical advisor that is knowledgeable in HSV, setting up phone service and/or a mailing address, advertising the group, and successful completion of the HELP Affiliation Exam.  Because ASHA is a non-profit organization we cannot offer financial assistance to HELP groups, though we do provide literature and technical advice.  We encourage groups to seek out free sources of support! from local public or private service organizations.

If you are in terested in starting a local HELP group in your area, please contact me again and I will send you the materials required to get the group started and information to successfully complete the exams.  I can be reached at (919) 361-8486, or e-mail me at lei@ashastd.org.

We look forward to working with you in the future.

Sincerely,

Leigh A. Jolley Manager, Herpes Resource Center

Looks like I have my work cut out for me.  If anyone has suggestions, from Colorado or not, please offer them up.  I would love to get advice from anyone who has been involved in setting up a HELP organization in their area.  I'd appreciate specific information on where they received their non-profit funding, how they located a medical advisor, etc.  I'm going to start doing some research.  Anyone have any ideas where I should start looking for funding?  (That seems to be my biggest hurdle at the moment).  I want to be as knowledgeable as! possible and have all my ducks in a row before I begin soliciting. Thanks all and sincerely, Mindy in Colorado
